What is Sports Medicine Acupuncture?

Sports Medicine Acupuncture® is an integrative approach of assessment and treatment that combines both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Sports Medicine. We combine Postural Assessment, Functional Movement Screening, Orthopedic Assessment and Special Tests, along with Traditional Chinese diagnostic techniques to create a custom tailored treatment plan for each individual. San Diego Sports Acupuncture has three licensed Sports Medicine Acupuncture® practitioners on staff, Sean Davis, Uzi Chen, and TJ Morton.

Certification Process

After graduating from an accredited 4 year acupuncture university with a Masters level degree or higher, and completing a rigorous licensing exam, Licensed Acupuncturists can enroll in the Sports Medicine Acupuncture® Certification (SMAC) program. The SMAC program requires 15 courses across 4 modules, with each module having its own cadaver lab and final examination. Each module also contains coursework on how to perform orthopedic tests, correct postural asymmetries, and treat a wide range of injuries.

Once a practitioner has completed all 4 modules, including cadavers and exams, they can sit for a practical exam with one of the proctors in order to become Certified Sports Medicine Acupuncture®. Due to the intense time-investment and the level of mastery required to pass the practical exam, there are less than two hundred Certified Sports Medicine Acupuncture® practitioners in the United States today.
